Tooth Whitening Kits

Before the invention of tooth whitening kits, we had to go to the dentist to have our teeth bleached – like getting your hair dyed by a hairdresser, or having your nails done.   Now, luckily, there are over the counter products readily available for a do-it-yourself teeth bleaching job.  But, like bleaching your own hair, there are risks so you need to pick your bleaching product with care.

In most cases, tooth whitening gel is applied to the surface of the teeth and left on for a few hours or overnight.  This type of item typically contains alcohol or glycerin due to the fact you will need it to dry promptly once it is applied to your teeth.  You can find two issues with these tooth whitening kits.  One is that you simply might indeed rub a lot of the gel off, resulting in a patchy bleaching job.  The other is that substances like alcohol can have a drying effect on all of the tissues of the mouth, and this will contribute to bad breath.

Other tooth whitening kits use bleaching strips which are applied to the teeth. Whist these stay on reliably, they can often not touch the entire surface of the tooth – the indented surfaces in between the teeth don’t get bleached whilst the fronts of the teeth do.  This can result in an odd visual effect that you don’t want.

The best tooth whitening gel is one that’s applied directly on to the teeth by covering them with a form-fitting tray full of whitening agent. This bathes all surfaces of the tooth with bleach whilst avoiding your gums.   Clean your teeth thoroughly just before working with the tooth whitening kits, and leave the tray on for the time specified in the tooth whitening kits directions.   By using the right kit, you will get excellent results without doing any harm to your mouth.
